Settings

Rules, looks, and the countries you want to stay out of.

Classic rules (v1)The original game: every visit scores the same, no avoided countries, no flag postcards and the original map. Your passport and coins still count.
Sound effectsA chime when you collect a flag. Rarer flags ring longer.
Flag pop-upsThe card that drops in when you collect flags. Off shows a short message instead.
Avoid countries

Avoided countries are hatched on the map. You can't stop in them or drive across them, so you have to learn their neighbours instead. Applies from your next trip.

How to play

Get from the start to the destination by naming real places along the way.

  1. Name a settlement within range. The dashed circle shows how far your tank takes you. Any real city, town or village of 500+ people counts. A bare name means the nearest one; for another, add where it is, like Tripoli, Libya or Portland, Maine.
  2. Every stop refuels you. Big cities fill the tank. Villages only top it up, but they score far more. A hop shorter than a fifth of your tank scores less, so make every leg count.
  3. Plan your own route, or let the atlas pick. In New trip, choose one or more regions, and optionally a start, a destination and up to three places to pass through, like Munich to Grozny by way of Budapest. Checkpoints must be reached before the destination and pay a bonus.
  4. Familiar places pay less. Your first visit to a place earns a 1.5× bonus. After that, each return visit pays less, down to 0.35×, and refuels less too: half from the 4th visit, a quarter from the 6th.
  5. Discover to win big. The arrival bonus grows with the share of your stops that are places you have never been. The Discovery bar on the dashboard shows it. Pick Uncharted as the region for a trip through the countries you know least (score ×1.15).
  6. Roads follow the land. If the straight line crosses a bay, you drive round it, and that longer distance comes out of your tank. Straits up to 50 km are bridged. Wider water needs a ferry ticket and a port at both ends. A boat can only moor on the coast and sails round headlands.
  7. Collect flags. Every new place you stop in unlocks the flags that fly there: the city's own flag, its state or region, and the country. Your collection lives in the Passport, and every flag nudges your explorer rating up.
  8. Far-Flung Isles. Pick the boat, then the Far-Flung Isles voyage: sail from a real port to a remote island outpost like Grytviken on South Georgia, Adamstown on Pitcairn, Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island or Cockburn Town in the Turks and Caicos. Your boat is stocked for the longest ocean crossing, the capital counts even if it sits inland, and voyages score ×1.3.
  9. Take the train. On a road trip, towns with a station connect along real railway lines, up to 900 km a ride. Those trains cost a few coins and no fuel, and the town you arrive in scores half. Or pick Train as your vehicle: a whole trip by rail, station to station, with a rail range that refills at every stop and full points.
  10. Blind spots collects the places you keep missing: towns you drive straight past, towns under your flights and train rides, and Study answers you get wrong. Flip through them like flashcards with A/D or the arrow keys.
  11. Stuck? Scout shows three reachable places with only their first letter. If you give up, the map draws a route from where you are, through the biggest and closest places, so you can learn it.
  12. Earn coins mostly from finishing trips (1 per 10 points, and longer trips pay a bigger arrival bonus), plus flags, Study, blind spots and achievements. Spend them in the shop on supplies, upgrades, interface themes and map styles.
Stops

Places come from GeoNames (cities500, CC BY 4.0), flags from Wikimedia Commons via Wikidata, and coastlines and borders from Natural Earth. Road and sea distances follow a 10 km grid of the coastline, not real roads. Progress is saved in this browser.

All aboard: trains are here

Ride real railway lines around the world, drawn from OpenStreetMap. Name a town with a station and the train follows the actual track there. You use no fuel, you get a "by rail" stamp, and the town you arrive in scores half.

Places you keep missing: towns you drove straight past, towns under your flights and train rides, and Study answers you got wrong. Name each one, flip the card, and be honest.
